News Brief: RIGOL Releases New Oscilloscope Line and Spectrum Analyzer

RIGOL, a Beijing-based company, is celebrating their 20th anniversary. To mark the occasion, RIGOL has announced the release of two products: the 7000 range of oscilloscopes and the affordable RSA3000 real-time spectrum analyzer range.

RIGOL's well-known in the field of electronics for its test equipment, including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, waveform generators, digitally-programmed power supplies, etc.

RIGOL's beginnings started back in 1998 in Beijing. Its first product was a high-performance virtual digital oscilloscope. Since then, it has opened offices in Ohio and Germany and now has over 400 employees. Now that it's 20 years old, RIGOL has released two new products for the latest engineering projects: the 7000 range of oscilloscopes and the affordable range of RSA3000 real-time spectrum analyzers.

7000 Series Oscilloscopes

RIGOL's first product announcement is a new range of oscilloscopes that aims to provide performance for mid-range oscilloscopes. The 7000 range of oscilloscopes, which feature a minimum bandwidth of 100MHz, include:
  • 10 Giga sample per second
  • 500 Mega sample record length
  • 20 x oversampling at 500MHz while capturing 50ms of data

RIGOL has differentiated this new range of oscilloscopes by introducing their new internal architecture, the UltraVision II all on its Phoenix chip-set that includes two custom ASICs for front-end analog and signal processing.

The front-end ASICs are handled by high-performance hardware which includes the Xilinx Zync-7000 SoC (maybe that’s where the 7000 gets its name from?), dual-core ARM-9 processors, high-speed DDR, and QDRII display. This architecture allows for a waveform capture rate of 600,000 waveforms per second with all the waveforms color graded, fantastic time-base accuracy, and jitter performance.

Here's a brief rundown of what's inside the Xilinx Zync-7000 SoC:
  • Dual-core ARM Cortex A9
  • 512KB L2 Cache and 256KM on-chip memory
  • Artix-7 FPGA Logic Block
  • 2 USB, 2 Gigabit Ethernet, 2 SD / SDIO
  • 2 UART, 2 CAN, 2 x I2C, 2 SPI, 32b GPIO
  • Dedicated DSP slices (up to 2020 DSP blocks)

The scope is being touted for signal processing capabilities but also for its integrated 10.1-inch display with a resolution of 1200 x 600. The 7000 range of oscilloscopes also have an HDMI output for viewing data on a larger screen (giving engineers the opportunity to ask management for 70-inch screens mounted to their cubical).

Running a real-time operating system (Linux +Qt), the range also provides six tools in one product including an scilloscopeo, logic analyzer, protocol analyzer, waveform generator, digital voltmeter, and counter.

RSA3000 Spectrum Analyzers

Like the 7000 range of oscilloscopes, the RIGOL RSA3000 spectrum analyzers are mid-range spectrum analyzers for engineers who are looking for an analyzer that does not require the high performance of the RSA5000 series.

The new analyzers come with features including a 10.1-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1024 x 600, 512MB of internal storage, three front USB ports, tracking generator output, a high accuracy clock input (found on the back), IF output, LAN port, triggers, HDMI output,10MHz output, and a 10MHz input.

Of course, engineers don’t need an analyzer for its various I/O capabilities; they need them for the analyzing capability! The RSA3000 range of spectrum analyzers can:
  • 10MHz real-time bandwidth analysis (upgradable to 40MHz)
  • Probability of Intercept (POI) of 7.45uS
  • 7 visualization modes
  • Resolution bandwidth of 10Hz
  • Noise floor of -161dBm
  • Full span sweep of 1ms
  • Perform 146,484 FFTs per second

The new RIGOL RSA3000 range of spectrum analyzers are planned to give engineers an affordable yet powerful tool with a starting price of $4,899 which is remarkable when considering the features it includes and the price of other spectrum analyzers.

According to Michael Rizzo, RIGOL USA's general manager, "Engineers integrating RF technologies need to correlate events in both the frequency and time domain, the integration of our new RSA3000 with our DS7000 Digital Oscilloscope allows engineers to quickly visualize cross-domain interactions and speed debug and integration activities.”
