Trinamic Introduces High-Power Gate Driver for BLDC and PMSM Motor Control Solutions

The TMC6200 high-voltage gate driver integrates in-line current sensing to implement complete Field Oriented Control solutions for BLDC and PMSM servo motors drawing up to 100 Amps.
The TMC6200 is a one-chip solution, enabling flexible designs that can be tuned to perfectly match the motors in nearly any application.

Featuring integrated in-line current sense amplifiers with programmable amplification, the device includes most everything needed except the sensing resistors and the MOSFETs to power and control brushless DC (BLDC) motors and Permanent Magnet Synchronous (PMSM) motors.

What are BLDC and PMSM Servo Motors?

In a BLDC, the rotor is a permanent magnet. The stator is composed of multiple coils arranged around the circumference of the rotor’s rotation. The stators are turned on and off in sequence, and the magnetic interaction between the rotor’s permanent magnet and the stator’s electromagnets nudges the rotor, in a step-by-step manner, to rotate.

A PMSM servo motor is similar, and in both cases the position of the rotor in relation to the stator must be ascertained, which is where devices such as the TMC6200 comes in.

TMC6200 in Action

The TMC6200 can implement the complete high-voltage section of a Field Oriented Control (FOC) drive system for 12V, 24V, or 48V PMSM motors drawing up to 100A. The image below illustrates the TMC6200 working in concert with the TMC4671.

Michael Randt, Founder and CEO of Trinamic, states, “The TMC6200 complements the TMC4671 hardware-based servo controller building blocks and offers programmable safety features like short detection and over-temperature thresholds, enabling robust and reliable designs using an off-the-shelf building block.”

As described in the datasheet, the TMC6200-EVAL is available to help designers get up and running quickly.

What the Competition has on Offer

Given the popularity of BLDC and PMSM motors, it isn’t surprising that many manufacturers offer integrated semiconductor solutions for drive and control, optimized for a variety of operating environments. Here is just a small sampling from a huge wealth of possibilities.

The RAJ306000 is a motor control IC from Renesas for controlling three-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motors that are used in battery-operated applications, like power tools and drones, operating at 6V to 30V.

Allegro Microsystems’s A4964 is a BLDC motor controller designed specifically for automotive applications. It operates over a supply range of 5.5 to 50 V and over temperatures ranging from -40ºC to +150ºC.
