Intel RealSense Camera R200 | Featured Product Spotlight

This Featured Product Spotlight is part of a video series exploring the specifications, applications, and market context of new products.

RealSense Camera R200

Intel’s RealSense Camera R200 is a world-facing, long range stereoscopic 3D imaging system used to sense the surrounding environment. The unit includes three cameras: one RGB camera capable of 1080p at 30 frames per second, and two IR cameras used with the on-board IR laser to measure depth.

For all the advances in technology, we still have a lot of 2D interactions with the world around us. But there are a lot of opportunities to add depth enhanced photo and video to our data collection. With drones, virtual and augmented reality, and 3D scanning, we can provide users with experiences that are more immersive and more valuable.

Intel’s RealSense Camera R200 is designed to see what the user sees around them. It works by sending a random, non-uniform light pattern from the projector. This light reflects off objects in the field of view and is detected by the two IR cameras, which are on opposite ends of the module. An on-board ASIC uses the differences between the data from the two cameras to compute the depth of the scene, and this is paired with the RGB camera data to create a 3D image.

The camera uses a USB3 interface and is versatile, able to be mounted on tripods, tablets, ultrabooks, drones, robots, AR and VR gear, and other connected devices.

For AR and VR applications, it’s able to create digital environments while estimating the camera pose in real-time. Real-world objects can be scanned in 3D and added to the AR or VR scenes, or used in 3D modeling and inspection work.

For imaging applications, adding depth data enables a variety of functions. Image and video can be refocused after being taken, and background segmentation can rely on depth rather than color, allowing for background removal and digital green screening.

Intel RealSense cameras are supported in the robotics operating system, ROS. Robots can easily take advantage of the RealSense Camera R200 for object identification, measurement, tracking, and interaction or avoidance.
