The electro-mechanical device or machine
used for various purposes and are controlled & operated with the
help of programming techniques is called as a robot. The robots are
various types based on their applications such as industrial robots, military robots, space robots, domestic robots, walking robots, climbing robots, and so on. The most advanced robotics projects
are being developed for effectively using in various fields for several
applications. In this article, let us discuss about a special type of
robotics projects, namely line following robotic vehicle with walking
and climbing mechanism.
Robotic Vehicle
The robotic vehicles
are special type of machines designed to move on the ground, in the
air, under water and in space autonomously without a human on board.
These robotic vehicles are controlled and operated by various sensors
based control systems. The robotic vehicles are specially designed to
use in conditions where human beings are unable to enter such as fire
accidents, very high or very low temperatures, etc.,.
Line Follower Robot
The robotic vehicle which moves by following a specific path or line can be termed as a line follower robot.
These line follower robots are specially used in industrial
applications for special purposes such as transporting various parts or
machinery or vehicles (cars, bikes, etc.,) by following the specific
line from one point (generating unit) to another point (assembling
unit).
Line Following Robotic Vehicle with Walking and Climbing Mechanism
The normal line following robotic vehicle with special features such as walking and climbing mechanism is one of the interesting robotics projects for engineering students,
which can be used for several applications. Simple steps to design a
line follower robot with walking and climbing mechanism are shown below.
Step1: Gathering required Components
The components required for designing
line following robotic vehicle with walking and climbing mechanism are
to be estimated based on robot application. Gather all the electrical
and electronic components such as resistors, capacitors, IR
transmitters, DC motors, transistors, robot body and photo diodes with
appropriate ratings along with other parts such as cardboard, bolts,
nuts, aluminum strips, etc., as per requirement. All the required
components for designing robotics projects (project kits) can be easily
purchased online from eCommerce websites such as www.edgefxkits.com.
Step2: Analyzing the Circuit for Line Follower Robot
Primarily design a block diagram of project circuit with various blocks such as a power supply block,
IR LED & photo diode block and so on. After gathering components,
analyze the circuit design based on working various components used.
Then place the components over a solderless breadboard as per circuit
diagram using connecting wires for testing the circuit working before
assembling circuit on the PCB. By testing the circuit over solderless
breadboard if any changes required in the circuit or ratings of the
components, then alternations can be done easily without wasting money
& time for replacing components or to alter circuit design.
Step3: Assembling and Soldering Components
Thus, after analyzing the circuit
design, assemble the components as per circuit diagram over the PCB.
Then, solder the circuit using soldering gun & soldering wire by
following proper soldering guidelines. Connect all the parts of the
robot properly to form a line follower robot as shown in the above image
and glue the parts of robotic vehicle, if required.
Step4: Working of Line Follower Robot
The IR transmitter and photo diode are used as a photo sensor
pair which can be used for detecting the specified path for the
movement of line follower robot while walking & climbing walls. The
photo sensor pair gives appropriate signals to switch the transistors
for driving the motors of line follower robot.
