Fallen retired Justice Kasanga Mulwa was a brave leader who always spoke his mind, Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana said on Friday evening.
Justice Mulwa, a retired High Court and East African Court of Justice lawyer, succumbed to illness on March 16 aged 77 and will be buried on March 24.
Speaking in Nairobi when he joined family members and friends in preparing for the burial of the prominent lawyer, Mr Kibwana said Mulwa, who hailed from Makueni County and resided in Machakos County, was his longtime friend.
“He always spoke his mind, and maybe that is why he did not rise very high in government ranks,” said the governor.
The governor recounted of an episode during his days as a law student at the University of Nairobi when he was arrested among other students and tutors for participating in a riot and the late lawyer came to his rescue.
“Justice Mulwa told the court: ‘Leave this one alone, we are going to cane him back at home,’” said Mr Kibwana to the applause of the hitherto sombre audience.
The burial preparation meeting was attended by former vice president Kalonzo Musyoka, Anti-corruption boss Mumo Matemu, Makueni MP Daniel Maanzo, former PS Sammy Kyungu, Justice Philip Waki and Sammy Muumbi among others.
Describing Justice Mulwa as “a special one,” Mr Musyoka said that he was still coming to terms with the death.
According to Ndola Ndolo of the funeral organizing committee, a requiem mass is set for Monday at AIC Milimani in Nairobi and on Tuesday the body leaves Lee Funeral home for burial at Mr Mulwa's Lukenya home in Machakos County.
