Solar-Powered Sockets that You Can Stick to Your Window

One new gadget allows users to charge their tech using solar power directly from a window.

Kyuho Song and Boa Oh, graduate design students of the Samsung Art and Design Institute in Seoul, created the first solar-powered socket. One side holds a solar panel; the other has a cable through which you can charge devices.

The smart design has recently featured at the Global Grad Show of Dubai Design Week on October 24. The event included designs from around the world.
While consumers are becoming more familiar with new types of solar panels, the solar socket makes larger devices portable. The clever tool is small, easy to use, and lightweight.

“The Window Socket offers a neat way to harness solar energy and use it as a plug socket. So far we have seen solutions that act as a solar battery backup, but none as a direct plug-in. Simple in design, the plug just attaches to any window and does its job intuitively.”

The direct solar plug-in was designed to be universally compatible. Simply insert a two-prong plug and connect your device. While you stick the cup on the window, the mini-solar panels transfer power to the socket’s internal battery and plug just the same as you would do with a standard socket.

The design allows for power in instances where outlets can’t be found. Long road trips, power outages, or going camping serve as a few perfect examples of when to use the window socket.
It takes between five to eight hours to fully charge the socket. A full battery offers up to 10 hours of power, according to Kyuho Song.

“Right now, the socket can store about 1,000 mAh (amp-hours, a unit of charge), which is enough to keep a 60-watt light bulb lit for about 20 hours. It’s not quite enough to fully charge a dead iPhone, however, since the iPhone 5 features a 1,440 mAh-capacity battery, and the iPhone 6 Plus battery needs 2,915 mAh.”

The groundbreaking brilliant design goes one step further than the numerous types of solar adapters and batteries. The unique circular design goes beyond other chargers on the market.

The plastic shell focuses the absorption to the solar panel. It comes with a cut-off mode too. If you unplug your device, the socket will turn itself off and save battery life. The solar absorber is easily attachable and removable from windows or glass surfaces.

No word yet as to the plug’s availability and price. Song and Oh say they’re working on increasing the charge time and battery storage capacity. Even in prototype form, however, the product shows environmentally-friendly innovation is always possible.
